Portoviejo

Portoviejo, is a city of Ecuador which happens to be one of the most important of all the Ecuador Destinations. Portoviejo is located in the eastern coast of Portoviejo river, which is situated on the western part of Ecuador. This city is inhabited by almost 200,000 people and is the capital of the Province of Manabí.

History of Portoviejo

Portoviejo was discovered by a Spanish colonial ruler, Francisco Pacheco on 12th of March in 1535. Initially it was named as “Villa Nueva de San Gregorio de Portoviejo". The city was shifted to its present location in 1628. Portoviejo was one of the first settlements of Spanish origin to develop in Ecuador.

Commercial Important of Portoviejo

Portoviejo, which is also known as the city of “Royal Tamarind Trees”, is the commercial hub, for it produces good quantity and quality of tropical vegetables and fruits. It is also one of the main producers of coffee, tobacco, cocoa and sugarcane. San Gregorio de Portoviejo is also one of the primary distribution centres of all agricultural products that are being produced around the valley Portoviejo River.

Portovejenses

The inhabitants of Portoviejo, are known as Portovejenses. They are very warm and friendly people and are also very fun loving. Most of them are highly educated. They live a comfortable life aided with all the facilities in the city of Portoviejo.
