Independence of Belize

Independence of Belize came about in 1981 on 21st September after been ruled over by the Britishers for centuries. Apart from the British, the Spanish explorers also tried to establish their dominions in the country. The British succeeded in establishing their colony in Belize and ruled over it for quite some time. However, the forces of nationalism soon made their way into Belize and prompted the birth of the Belize nationalist movement. The movement centered around a demand for complete independence and self government. The Britishers had to finally concede to the demand of self-government. Within a couple of decades Belize became an independent nation. Apart from the colonial powers, Belize also had to deal with Guatemala's territorial claims. According to the latter, the Latin American countries post independence would have the same boundaries that it had during the rule of the Spaniards. The Britishers were, however, quick to dismiss such claims and thus Belize was under their jurisdiction. This conflict has not yet been resolved even though after much deliberations and negotiations and with international support. Belize also stressed on the fact that the independence from Britain and the Guatemalan claims were two separate issues. However, in the present day scenario Guatemala has recognized Belize's independence.
