Massachusetts comprises 50 cities and 301 towns. Boston is the capital as well as the largest city in the state. As of 2016, the population of Boston stood at 673,184 people. Other cities which comprise a population of more than 100,000 inhabitants are Worcester, Springfield, Lowell, and Cambridge. Gosnold, with a population of just 75 residents, is the least populous town in the state. The Oldest municipality in New England, Plymouth was incorporated in 1620.
