Hydroelectric plant Paraguay was built during the period of 1975 to 1991. This hydroelectric plant of Paraguay is known as the Itaipu hydroelectric power plant. The power plant has been built on the river of Parana. Hydroelectric plant Paraguay is run by the Itaipu Binacional. This power plant has the reputation of being the largest operational hydroelectric power plant.

Hydroelectric plant Paraguay is the result of a joint effort made by Paraguay and Brazil. There are about 18 generating units in this hydroelectric power plant. These units produce about 12,600 MW and also an output equaling to 75 million MWh per year. It has been estimated that the hydroelectric plant in Itaipu provided about 78% of energy supply to Paraguay in the year of 1995.

On the right bank of the river Parana is located the Spillway. This has got a total of 14 segmented sluice-gates. They have the capacity to discharge 62,200 cubic meters per second. Itaipu is known to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World as per the American Society of Civil Engineers. In the year of 2000, the hydroelectric plant of Paraguay provided about 93% of energy to Paraguay. This is one of the major attractions of Paraguay.
