A brief history says that the name of the city is originated from the Nahuti word "ullu", which signifies "obsidian river". While some others says that the name came from the words "Matagalpa Li" or "Nahuti Eztli", which means "river of blood" and "colored water river". Pueble Nuevo is another attraction in Estelli where ancient fossils almost 30 thosand years old of gigantic mammals can be found. San Juan de Limay is another small town in the region of Estelli boasts some beautiful soapstone statues, which offers the tourists enough to explore. La Estanzuela is a splendid waterfall, which is situated five kilometers south of Esteli.
