Brazil has 5,570 municipalities divided among 26 states. The municipalities of Brazil are considered administrative divisions of the states. On an average, every municipality has a population of 34,361.

In case you don’t know, each Brazilian state has 214 municipalities on an average. While Minas Gerais is the state with most number of municipalities, 853. Northwestern states such as Amazomas, Para, and Mato Grosso also have a high number of municipalities among them.

Roraima is the least subdivided state with 15 municipalities. It is followed closely by smaller states such as Alagoas, Rio De Janeiro, and Sergipe.

The only region in Brazil that is not divided into municipalities is the Federal District. This is where the national capital, Brasília, is located.
