The system of
San Marino Government runs on Unitary Multi-party Republic. The
San Marino Government exercises the executive power and the legislative power in San Marino. The legislative body of San Marino consists of 60 members, who form the Grand and General Council. The democratic election to elect the Grand and General Council happens every five years. The Council in turn elects two Captains Regent, who head the State and Government. The selection of two Captains Regent happens every six months.
The last parliamentary election was held in 2006. The two parties, who hold the majority of seats in the Council, are the following:
- Party of Socialists and Democrats or PSD
- Democratic Christian Party of San Marino or PDCS
The two Captain Regents elected in April 2007 for 6 month semester term were Alessandro Mancini and Alessandro Rossi.
The Government of San Marino has promoted tourism extensively in the recent years. For the cause of tourism, the San Marino Government has registered itself as the member of the World Tourism Organization. The Government has always encouraged a cordial relationship with Europe. The delegation from San Marino has always attended the 35-nation Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. San Marino even registered itself as the member of the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations. UN accepted San Marino as its member in 1992.
Alongside the promotion of tourism, the San Marino Government encourages the service sectors and small-scale industries. To encourage these sectors, the Government has announced exemptions of tax.
