Yola was set up in the year 1841 and was the former capital of the Muslim Fulani state. But with the British aggression in 1901, Yola and the other Nigeria cities were gradually turned into colonies. After its resurgence from the hands of the colonial powers, the city of Yola steadily revived itself. Today Yola is one of the major port cities of Nigeria. Yola lies on the eastern part of Nigeria and the port is constructed on the river Benue. Being a port city, it is one of the main commercial centers of the country, buoyant with numerous import and export activities. Through the port of Yola goods like peanuts, cotton, skins and hides are exported to the other countries around the world.
Yola has all the amenities of a modern urban center. The city's transport is also well developed, and is well connected to other Nigeria cities both by road and water.
There is a good ferry service connecting other parts of the country to Yola. Moreover, the Yola roadways take you to the adjoining cities of Numan, Fufore, Jimeta, Ganye and Jalingo. The city also has an airport as well as a private university affiliated to the America, known as the ABTI- American University of Nigeria.
