The city of Benin is the center of the rubber industry of Nigeria. The timber and Palm nuts that are produced in the nearby places are processed in the city. Carpets and furniture are also made here. The major attractive sites of Benin City are Oba's Palace, Okada House and Benin City National Museum. In these museums and art galleries some of the important statues of ancient times are preserved. The British invaders plundered the Benin City and took away with them about 2000 statues made of bronze. In the past, the Benin City was known for the artisans who did excellent bronze and ivory castings. Benin City earlier traded in pepper and ivory. In all over West Africa, Benin is mainly known as the city, which produces finest bronze casters.
The Universities of Benin City includes Benson Idahosa University and University of Benin. Benin is bordered by moats, which provide a spectacular view of the city. The moat of Benin is as historical as the China walls. It was specially built for defense. The moat was completed after three years. One of the major cities of West Africa was Benin City till it was invaded by the Englishmen.
