Many organization and associations have developed to protect the rights and privileges of the women in Kenya. The percentage of Kenyan women is more than men in the country and they constitute over fifty percent of the total population. Like their male counterparts the female population of Kenya also has equal fundamental rights. Women of non Kenyan origin do not have the same rights like the males. The comparatively stable political scenario is the main reason behind the better living standards of the women in Kenya. But even today the traditional beliefs and poverty are standing as two hurdles between the complete liberation of women like the western countries. Women are considered as the subordinates of men in almost all tribal cultures of Kenya this emotional shackle are still not broken even by the women themselves.
The government of Kenya and the media are taking serious steps to improve the living conditions of women in Kenya. However this effort of the government should be appreciated because no other African countries have addressed the rights of women. It has to be mentioned that the women population of Kenya comprises of about seventy percent of the illiterate people in the country. In recent times there has been a great upheaval in the country regarding the property rights of women. The instances of spousal abuse and rapes are an everyday affair in Kenya. A Kenyan woman is unable to pass her citizenship to her foreigner husband after marriage unlike their male counterpart.
Though there are many problems which are faced by the Kenyan women many organizations and the media are trying their best to improve this condition.
