The Costa Rica flag features five horizontal stripes- The top and bottom stripe are blue, the middle stripe is red and the stripes above and below the red stripe are white. The national coat of arms is placed in the red band.

The colors of the Costa Rica flag have been borrowed from the French Tricolore. The blue color in the flag represents the clear skies, the growth and development opportunities in the country, free and independent thinking, spirituality and infinity. White symbolizes joy and happiness, the power of wisdom, initiative of the people, and peace. Red represents the warmth and hospitality of the people, their sacrifices, and the vibrancy of the land.

Costa Rica's coat of arms was initially designed in 1848 but a number of changes were introduced subsequently. It features the three volcanoes of the country, sailing ships, and the rising sun. The initial design of the Costa Rica flag was drawn up in 1848 by the nation's First Lady, Paci'fica Ferna'ndez Oreamuno.
