University of Tartu

The University of Tartu is a national university of Estonia. Swedish king Gustav II Adolph founded the Tartu University in 1632. Its name was Academia Gustaviana or Universitas Dorpatensis initially. Owing to the Great Northern War, this university remained closed for a long time. However, it was again opened in 1802.

The University of Tartu in Estonia emerged as the first Language University of Estonia in 1919. The campus has four museums. Besides these, there are sports ground as well as botanical gardens. There are about 150 buildings of this university. Out of these, 30 are out of Tartu. There are also hostel facilities for the students.

The University of Tartu at Estonia presents a wide range of research-based graduate and postgraduate degree programs. It also deals with both applied and fundamental research programs. It puts a lot of emphasis on training and research to keep it at par with the changing scenario. A large number of foreign students also take admission in this university for higher studies.

The Tartu University has got the Academic Council as its highest governing body. Rector is the head of this university. Other members include the vice-rectors, deans of the faculties and also the student’s representative. There is an alumni association that helps the university by providing both financial and moral aid.
