The heart of Montreal is occupied by a three-headed hill better known as Mount Royal or Mont Royal. The city owes its name to this stone mass as the old name was Ville-Marie (Mary City). The new nomenclature has taken place only in the 18 th century. The city has a total area of 365.13 square kilometers. Next to Paris, Montreal is perhaps the most important French-speaking center in the world.
The map of the city shows that it is situated at the juncture of the Ottawa and the Saint Lawrence rivers, in the Island of Montreal. In the north east of Montreal there is Quebec, in the west Ottawa, in the southwest Toronto and in the south there in the New York City. The Saint Lawrence River borders the city in the south and the same is done by the Rivere des Prairies in the north.
