Map of Dundee Council

After Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen, Scotland’s fourth largest city in terms of population is Dundee. It is strikingly beautiful and boasts of a history, which dates back to the Roman Era. The city of Dundee is situated amidst two hills, the Balgay and the Law.

The city stands majestically overlooking the River Tay. A major industrial hub and a royal town, it revels in the support of the eastern seaport of Scotland.

The city of Dundee dates back to the bygone era of the 12th and the 13th century, also the time it was coveted with the title of a royal town. It was also known as one of the richest towns in Scotland at that time. The city suffered attacks for the next couple of centuries from the English and a lot of devastation took place, which completely destroyed the city. After the attacks, the city re-established itself and emerged as a new city in the year 1892 and also became an independent county town in 1894.

Dundee became famous for its ‘Three J’s’ which include Jute, Jam, and Journalism. The city is still very popular for its Jams and Marmalades, which are widely available. As fishing was an important part of the city’s culture, the largest whaling fleets of Scotland made their base here. Thereafter, in the 19th century, the textile manufacturers linked themselves with the whaling industry after discovering that whale oil and Jute mixed together, resulting in the production of bags and carpets.

There are various attractions in this finest city. The first and most significant was an RSS discovery, the first ship that was constructed in the United Kingdom to remain unaffected by the harsh weather conditions of Antarctica. Marine lovers and enthusiasts can get to see the oldest British wooden warship built in 1824, which is still in the water, known as the Frigate Unicorn. The city also has a science museum where one gets an opportunity to interact with robots. The City Churches which are placed under one roof is also one of the main attractions. The Food & Flower Festival held in the month of September is one of the biggest festivals in Scotland.
