Zambia covers an area of 752,000 square kilometers. Most of the country is a high plateau and there are mountain ridges. Most of the land in Zambia is flat. They are occasionally broken by hills formed due to erosion of crystalline rocks. These small mountains are the stores of the mineral resources of the country.
The land becomes lower towards the south .The plateau region is broken by the tributaries of the Zambezi River. Most of the rivers have water falls and rapids which are a unique feature of the country of Zambia. The major hydroelectric schemes and water rafting adventures are situated on the rivers.
Bangweulu, Mweru and Lake Tanganyika are the three most important lakes of the country. The second deepest natural lake is the Lake Tanganyika. Luapula River drains Lake Bangweulu.
