Economy of Uruguay

The economy of Uruguay is largely dependent upon its agricultural produce. An overwhelming majority of its industries like food processing, wool, leather production, and agribusiness is a further development of the country's agricultural products.

The agricultural economy of Uruguay makes up approximately 9% of the country's Gross Economic Product or GDP. The industrial sector contributes to more than 15% of the GDP. The small size of the Uruguayan population has forced its entrepreneurs to look beyond the country's external borders. The Uruguayan economy is an export driven one. This export led economy in Uruguay has compelled the South American country to trade cautiously in the world markets. The economy of Uruguay is dominated by the government in terms of key trade and involvement. Privatization of economic assets is not popular in a democratic country like Uruguay.
