East Timor

The south-Asian country of Timor Leste or East Timor is officially called the Democratic Republic of East Timor. The geographical boundaries of Timor Leste include the main island of Timor along with islands of Jaco, Atauro and Oecussi-Ambeno. The history of East Timor shows a long Portuguese colonial period due to which occurrence, Timor Leste was also earlier referred to as Portuguese Timor. However, modern Timor Leste was under Indonesian occupation since 1975 but it was only in 1997 that it became a sovereign republic following Indonesia's abiding the UN act to give up East timor occupation. The country of East Timor can be ranked alongside the Philippines in Asia as the country which practices Roman Catholicism predominantly.

However, the country of East Timor is a living example of poverty at its gruesome worst. A recent survey has shown that East Timor holds the record of the lowest per capita GDP at only $800. The country holds a moderate human development record and ranks 142nd in the world. Timor, the name was given to the nation by the Portuguese and in the present day, the country is listed in the UN' list of nations as Timor Leste.
