Qatar Population


Qatar Population was first estimated in the year 1908 by a British observer. In that year the Qatar population was numbered at 27,000. Out of 27,000 inhabitants there were 425 Iranian boat builders and 6000 foreign slaves. By the year 1930 the number of Iranians were increased to 5000, an increase of 20% in the population. Till 1940's the population of Qatar however, remained stable. The population estimate of Qatar in the year 1949 according to a confirmed source was 16,000.

In the 1950's due to the increase of oil exports the Qatar economy was developing at a rapid pace. As a result, it did generate a lot of employment opportunities for the people. Hence, large number of people from the neighboring countries migrated to this place in search of lucrative jobs. This has definitely increased the population in Qatar. In 1970 according to an estimate the population was 111,113 and out of that 45,039 were known to be Qataris. In 1977 the population reached 200,000 and among them 65% were non Qataris. From 1960-1975 the annual growth rate of population was 8.9% and from 1970-75 the growth rate was 12.7%. The population of Qatar in 1986 was 369,079, which rose to 371,863 in 1990 and it comprises of 70,000 Qataris.

The demography of Qatar mainly comprises of Bangladeshis, Indians, Pakistanis and Filipinos. The minor portion consisted of 16% Iranians, 20% Qataris, 25% Arabs and four percent other groups. The majority of the Qatar population is Sunni Muslim and the minority is made up of Hindu, Bahai, Christian and others.
