Norfolk Island Hospital, being the only medical center of the island, is entrusted with important duties and responsibilities. Norfolk Island Hospital plays an important role in the healthcare system of Norfolk Island.
Norfolk Island Hospital provides important medical facilities to the islanders. The government of Norfolk Island has also adopted several important measures so as to improve the quality of medical facilities and services provided by this hospital. There are 24 beds in this hospital and also a dispensary. This hospital of Norfolk Island also provides beneficial dental service to its patients. Emergency services are provided by this hospital for 24 hours.
However, very serious patients, who cannot be treated in this hospital, are transported to the better medical centers and hospitals located in the mainland area and also to New Zealand. The patients suffering from chronic disease are transferred from Norfolk Island Hospital either by commercial air ambulance or commercial passenger flight. At times, the Royal Australian Air Force is also used by Norfolk Island Hospital for transferring patients to a hospital in New Zealand or mainland.
Important financial contributions have also been made by the Australian Government to this hospital to enable it to function efficiently. The Australian Government had donated $40,000 for the betterment of Norfolk Island Hospital in 2006.
