Limbu Language is mostly spoken in Nepal, Darjeeling and Sikkim by those belonging to the Limbu community. Limbu Language is spoken mostly at the Sino-Tibetan, Himalayish, Tibeto-Burman, Kiranti, Mahakiranti and Eastern Limbu family of languages. People belonging to the Limbu community refer to themselves as Yakthumba and their language is known as Yakthung Pan. The total number of people speaking Limbu Language is 333633 across the globe with 28000 of them in India.
The four major dialects of Limbu are Panthare, Tambar Khole, Phedape and Chatthare. The standard dialect of Limbu Language is Panthare while most of the people speak as well as understand Phedape. Limbu Language is written in the Limbu script which is a Tibetan system of writing. Many of the Limbu publications are accompanied by a Nepali one since most of the literary works are available in the language of Limbu.
The popular Tanchoppa, the monthly magazine and newspaper, is published in Limbu Language. There are many works in Limbu literature and the oldest writings in Linbu language of Nepal are found in Darjeeling in West Bengal. Limbu script is also called Sirijunga and Kiranti. The Limbu script has undergone quite a number of changes in the last few decades however the true essence of the language is still preserved in its texts.
