The traditional Macedonian Flag had two equal horizontal parts of red and black color respectively. After constant protest from Greeks, Macedonia was obliged to change its original flag because the Greeks did not like their usage of the Great Star of Vergina on their flag.
They thought that it was not a Slavic symbol. The design of sun on the present Flag of Macedonia is a simplified version of the Star of Vergina. The sun symbolizes "the new sun of liberty" which is mentioned in the national anthem of Macedonia.
