Gomel also known as Homyel is the second largest city of Belarus. The name Gomel comes from the word ‘Gomiy’ which again comes from the word gom’ which means noise. Although the exact date of its formation by a Radimichi tribe was not known, the official report confirms it as 1142. In 1854, the city merged with the neighboring Bielica town and Jewish population in the city increased. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Gomel saw economic revival and in 18th and 19th century, it began to develop further with more factories and industries. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Belarus achieved independence in 1991.
