The political unrest and violence in Timor Leste has affected the Timor Leste health department and health conditions of children the most. The UNICEF is playing a major part in developing Timor Leste health conditions and working alongside the Timor Leste health department. Despite revolutionary steps being taken towards developing East Timor health issues, there are serious problems plaguing the country of Timor Leste. Most health hazards in Timor Leste are related to the children of Timor Leste and the major reason behind so many health related problems is due to the political unrest within Timor Leste.
Health problems in Timor Leste have raised because of the unhealthy living conditions in Timor Leste, often children along with their families have to stay in make-shift tents and camps specially erected for the displaced. Malaria, respiratory infections and diarrhea are the common diseases which spread out in these camps as a result of inadequate sanitary facilities. Children are increasingly prone to health hazards because of the lack of clean drinking water facilities and poor nutrition. As a result, under-five mortality rates are terribly high in Timor Leste, which is the basic Timor Leste health hazard. Lack of proper prenatal care has surged maternal mortality to alarming rates.
UNICEF, however, is actively looking into the Timor Leste health issue and is procuring vaccines and essential drugs for children from around the globe. In addition, medical facilities are also being improved and awareness regarding serious diseases like HIV/AIDS is also being spread. A National Commission on the Rights of the Child has recently come into formation so as to improve the conditions of the children of Timor Leste.
