On 27 August, 1971 the present version of Nicaragua Flag, which is based on the flag used by the United States of Central America was formally adopted by the government of Nicaragua. The blue and white colors of the horizontal bands represents the original color of the United Provinces of Central America. The horizontal bands are of equal size where the top and bottom strips are of blue color whereas the central band is of white color. The white panel features the Nicaragua Coat of Arm. The coat of arms of the flag feature a triangle, which is circled by by the words Republica de Nicaragua at the top and America Central on the bottom. The triangle represents equality. The five original states of Central America is represented by five volcanoes in the coat of arm.
Meaning of Nicaragua Flag
The top and bottom stripes are of blue color and represents the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea respectively whereas the white color depicts peace. According to contemporary interpretation the blue color represents loyalty and justice. White is believed to be symbol of virtue and purity. A red Phrygian cap, white rays and rainbow inside the triangle represents liberty and peace.
History of Nicaraguan Flag
After independence from Spain in 1821, Nicaragua in 1838 became a federation of United Provinces of Central America. When the federation dissolved, Nicaragua become an independent nation. Till 1854, Nicaragua used the blue-white-blue flag. In 1908 state coat of arm is included in the flag. The present form of the Nicaragua Flag was adopted on August 27, 1971.
