The Macedonia Flag is one of the most recent flags in the whole world since it was officially adopted on October 6, 1995. The republic of Macedonia came into existence in the year 1991 and it was then that Macedonia Flag was adopted.
The flag of Macedonia has an interesting history which dates back from the tome of Alexander when the 16 pointed sun of Alexander was used as the official flag of the country. This sun was known as the symbol of Vergina and was a part of the ancient Macedonian culture and history.
The Macedonian government then started using a flag which had a red background and a yellow outlined star on the upper hoist corner. This flag was adopted on 31 December, 1946 and as in use till the Vergina sun flag replaced it in the year 1991. However, the use of Vergina sun caused a lot of disapproval among the Greek population. They thought that it was not a Slavic symbol and hence the present Macedonian flag was adopted.
The present Macedonian flag has a stylized sun with eight rays. This sun stands for the "new sun of liberty" which has been mentioned in the national anthem of Macedonia.
