Laos Location indicates that the country is located in the center of Southeastern Asia. It is a completely landlocked area. Laos is surrounded by countries like Burma, China, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. The highest point is Phou Bia 2,81m and lowest point is Mekong River 70m with 0 coastline.
Mekong River demarcates the western border. Primarily consisted of mountains Laos has an elevation above 500 meters with steep terrain, narrow river valleys and low agricultural lands. The geographic coordinated are 1800 N and 10500 E.
Most of the northern part is mountains (70% of the country). Vientiane and the Plain of Jars in Xiangkhoang Province are consisted of plain land. The terraces of the Mekong, its tributaries and the alluvial plains cover only about 20% of the land area. Total area of the country is 236,800km out of which 230,800 sq km is land and another 6,000 sq km is water.
Khammouane Plateau in the center and the Bolaven Plateau in the south bring more variety to the landscape. The highest mountain in the country is 2820 m in Xiang province. Most of Laos is covered by forest.
Location of Laos suggests that the country can be accessed by air or road. But the country has no direct link with the sea and most of the part of Mekong River is not suitable for navigation.
