Fiji Flag or the national flag of the Republic of Fiji has a light blue background to symbolize the Pacific Ocean. Officially this flag was adopted on 10th October, 1970. in the upper quadrant of the hoist-side one can notice the flag of UK. On the center of the other half of the flag there is the Fijian shield.
The association of Fiji with great Britain is represented through the Union Jack on the Fiji Flag. The image o a golden lion holding a coconut is featured in the Fijian Shield. A palm tree, sugarcane, bananas and a white dove of peace is displayed on the other panels in the shield. The ratio of the flag is 1:2.
As a result of a competition won jointly by Mr. Robi Wilcock an Mrs. Murracy Mac Kenzie the design of the Fijian Flag was selected. No official recommendation or defined shades were proposed. This design was chosen among a number of variety.
Though a public design competition was held in 1990 for a new Flag of Fiji the design remained unchanged due to the indifference of the government. Fiji held a competition to design a new flag on the independence day. But not much difference was made. The only visible difference is made by removing the white disk behind the coat of arms and the color was changed to light blue.
Fiji Flag is hoisted on the independence day and other important days. It is one of the constitutional duty of the people of Fiji to respect their national flag.
