Abeokuta Map

Abeokuta is a city in the southwest of Nigeria. It is the capital of the Ogun state. The city is located on the east side of the Ogun River, enclosing a cluster of rock-strewn protrusions rising above the adjacent forested savanna. The city derives its name from the Olumo Rock, a gigantic outcrop of granite rocks.

Location of Abeokuta
The city of Abeokuta is located at a distance of 100 kms from the city of Lagos. The city is situated on the central railway line from Lagos founded in 1899, about 78 km south of Lagos. It is sited on the previous trunk road from Lagos to Ibadan. The city of Ibadan, the capital of the Oyo state, is located to the north of Abeokuta, about 70 kms away. Abeokuta also has road connections to Ilaro, Shagamu, Iseyin, and Kétou.

History of Abeokuta
The ancient and mythical historical background of Abeokuta revolves around the Olumo Rock. Caves enclose the cluster of rocks, one of which is around 20 feet in length and 25 feet in breadth. The Olumo Rock is sacred to the Egba tribe of Abeokuta, as it is the place where they found a safe haven from the aggressors at the time of the mutually ruinous conflicts. The Olumo Rock is a monument of the belief in tribal unity for the native tribes, and also a symbol of potency and shelter. The Olumo Rock is connected to the history of the ancestors to the people of Abeokuta.
