Flora in Lithuania



Lithuania is situated amidst large forest zone. The mixed forest area of the country comprises of various kinds of Lithuania flora. The country lies in a mixture of broadleaved and boreal forest.
The hornbeam species like "Carpinus betulas" are mostly found in the northern coniferous zone. The flora of Lithuania comprises of various species of vascular plants namely bryophytes, algae and others. Around 500 species of Lichens and a large variety of fungi species are found in the country.

The coniferous forest consists of about sixty percent of the Lithuania forest area. The Scots pine and the Norway Spruce are the main conifers of the forests. These coniferous trees are mainly found in the northern, western and southern parts of Lithuania. The flora of Lithuania also comprises of broadleaf woodlands steppe and arctic species.

Lithuania has a small portion of wetlands. The aquatic plant life in Lithuania comprises of duckweed, horsetails and bulrushes. Several wetland species like Scheuchzeria palustris, Eriophorum, cloudberry, cranberry species, sundew and Andromed are found in abundance.



Apart from these species of flora in Lithuania, a variety of crops are grown in this land including wheat, oats, peas, potatoes sugar beet and others. Various types of mushroom species are also cultivated in the agricultural land. Hypericum, Thyme and Common Hawthorn are the medicinal herbs found in the country.
