Laos is a country mostly covered by forests. The trees of these tropical forests shed their leaves during the dry season. A large part of it is consisted of primal forest. Excessive lumbering has leaded them into danger. Laos Flora has got a rich variety because of the country's pristine ecology.
The wide range of Laos Flora can be seen in the tropical rain forest, which is consisted of three vegetative layers. The single-trunk, high reaching dipterocarp trees form the top layer. Hardwoods like teak make the middle canopy and the third layer is made up of small trees, grasses etc. Bamboo can be found at times.
The forest in the southern part is an extension of the Kampuchean type of vegetation. Lianas, rattan and palms can be found throughout the country. Flora of Laos is a rich natural resource of the country. Local livelihoods depend on the forests to a large extent. However forest is drastically decreasing in Laos.
Traditional forest cleaning is one of the reasons behind this. Some of the ethnic tribes use slash and burn method which resulted in the destruction of the forest. Flora in Laos is used for various purposes such as decoration or medical purposes. Different types of Flora are found in different region according to the soil, weather etc.
Laos Flora is still unexplored with practically unknown original vegetation. Flora of Laos add more charm to the natural beauty of the country.
