Burundi Environment

Burundi Environment has been subjected to immense exploitation at the hands of man. The diverse flora and fauna, the natural resources, the whole living world has been affected by the problems faced by the natural environment of Burundi. Proper steps need to be taken to ensure that no further damage is done to Burundi environment.

The landlocked country comprised of fertile regions in the past. With the growth of population increased the requirement of land. Forests of Burundi were chopped off. The deforestation was also caused by overgrazing and illegal terracing. The cutting down of forests in Burundi led to soil erosion and the level of fertility was largely reduced.

The lack of implementation of laws regarding the felling of trees for fuel increased the pace of deforestation. Five species of mammals of Burundi feature in the list of endangered animals. Six species of birds of Burundi share the same fate.

The country has recently become aware of the serious threat to Burundi environment and is trying to safeguard further destruction of it. As part of various international agreements, Burundi is formulating policies to protect its environment by putting a stop to all kinds of illegal practices that destroy the natural environment of Burundi.
