Botswana Food

The traditional Botswana Food is praised throughout Southern Africa. The hotels and restaurants in Botswana serve these traditional dishes
alongside the various continental dishes. But once the guests taste the local Botswana food, it gets difficult for them to go for the continental dishes. The main dishes of Botswana that form the staple diet of the local citizens are millet and sorghum porridge. Mostly, non-vegetarian dishes are preferred on the dining tables in Botswana. Mutton and beef are the most widely consumed meat forms in the country. Apart from those, chicken and lamb are also available in abundance. Fresh fish from rivers is also quite popular in the Botswana and forms an integral part of Botswana cuisine.

The meat dishes are prepared with much care in Botswana. Few of the meat preparations in Botswana include:
  • Seswaa or Chotlho – This preparation needs mainly the inner parts of cow or goat. The only other ingredients needed for this particular preparation are salt and water. This dish is usually served on festive occasions.
  • Oxtail – This spicy dish is a favorite with the local people of Botswana.
Few of the traditional cuisines of Botswana do not involve meat. These unique foods of Botswana include:
  • Morama – It is a huge tuber found in the underground. It is also a type of fungus, though edible.
  • Mopane worm – It is prepared in a unique fashion by either cooking in hot ashes or by boiling or by drying and frying.
The dried bean leaves along with peanuts and groundnuts are also consumed on large scale in Botswana.
