Lukla is a small town in the Khumbu region of Nepal. It serves as the base for people embarking on a visit to the Himalayas. The name Lukla means a 'place with many sheep and goats'.
The travelers usually reach Lukla by flight from Kathmandu. Trekking to Lukla from Jiri takes about 7-8 days. Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary also walked from Jiri during their ascent of Mount Everest for the first time. The trek from Lukla to Namche Baazar helps in acclimatizing to the increasing altitude.
There are many cities and towns that lie in close vicinity of the town of Lukla. These include Gudel, Chaunrikharka, Junbesi, Mingbo, Thammi, Thammu, Thyangboche and Namche Bazar. The airport at Janakpur is the nearest to the town of Lukla.
