It was originally known as 64 because Eldoret was established at the 64th mile post on the wagon route from Londiani. The name Eldoret was derived from the Maasai word “eldore”, which means “stony river”. The reason behind this was the bed of the stony Sosiani River. ‘T’ was added so that it can sound like a Nandi word because at the colonial era the area was ruled by Nandi. Before that respectively Sirikwa and Maasai ruled it. The official name Eldoret was given in 1912.

Prior to that in 1908 the Afrikaans-speaking South-Africans settled in that area. Later on Europeans and Asians also came and settled there.
