Vietnam (the Socialist Republic of Vietnam officially) is a country in Southeast Asia. Vietnam is situated at the eastern edge of mainland Southeast Asia. The city is about 85 miles (140 km) inland from the South China Sea. Hanoi is also a province-level municipality (than pho) administered by the central government. It is one of the most popular and attractive cities in Northern Vietnam. Hanoi is the second-largest city in Vietnam and is about 1,600 km north of Saigon. It is also the center of the Red River Delta.

The country has various topographic features ranging from tropical lowlands to hills to densely forested highlands with level land covering no more than 20 % of the area. Vietnam is divided into the following physiographic features:

  • Highlands and the Hong River Delta in the north 
  • The Annamite Range, along with the coastal lowlands in the center

Vietnam Climate

Vietnam’s climatic conditions vary considerably across the country due to differences in latitude and variety in topographical relief. The country has a monsoon-influenced climate typical of mainland Southeast Asia. The climatic conditions vary significantly between regions. The northern areas of the country experience a monsoonal and Warm temperate climate (Cwb) with four distinct seasons, while in southern regions (south of the Hai Van Pass), the climate is tropical monsoon (Aw) with only two seasons (rainy and dry). In mountainous areas of Vietnam (Sa Pa and Da Lat), a temperate climate is there, while continental climates exist in Son La Province and Lai Chau Province.

Vietnam History

The history of Vietnam dates back to 111 BC, when China ruled the entire region of the Red River Valley. The rule ended in 938 AD when revolts toppled the Chinese ruling dynasty. Vietnam was divided into two kingdoms in the 17th century, one ruled by the Nguyen dynasty and another by the Tay son.

In 1802, the single kingdom of Vietnam was created as the French-backed Nguyen lord defeated the Tay Son. In 1890, the region became a French protectorate as it was invaded and conquered by France. During world war II, Vietnam was briefly conquered by Japan. Ho Chi Minh (the leader of the Vietnamese Communist Party) declared the country’s independence in 1945. 

The First Indochina war happened when France decided to re-invade the country and ended in 1954 when France was defeated. The country then became divided into the communist north and the communist south. In 1957 Vietnam war started as a communist group from the south called the Viet kong emerged. In 1975 war ended, and a single-party socialist republic of Vietnam was formed as the communist overran the south and took Saigon.
