Getting to Tajikistan by flight
  • There are few international flights from Delhi, Istanbul, Moscow, Kabul to Dushanbe, the capital city of Tajikistan.
  • Flight services are provided by Domodedova airlines from Moscow to Dushanbe, Turkish Air and Tajik Air from Istanbul to Dushanbe.

Travel to Tajikistan by road
  • If you travel to Tajikistan by road, make sure to clear customs at the borders.
  • It is better to travel from Uzbekistan to Tajikistan in a hired vehicle but it will not be permitted to cross the borders in that case. One indeed has to cross the border by foot.
  • Crossing the border between Kirghistan and Tajikistan is easier taking only four days to travel from Osh to Dushanbe through the Pamir Highway. However, it would be wise to get a GABA permit at Gorno-Badakhshan border. There is also a shorter route through Karategin valley but taking that route could call for trouble if not registered previously with KGB located at Jirgital.

Avalanches are frequent in Tajikistan so there may be road blocks. Hence it is advisable not to travel to Tajikistan by roads during winter. It is best to travel in broad daylight. It is preferred that you hire an experienced driver. The journey by roads could take a few extra hours because of the checkpoints at the borders. There may be several verification of documents and vehicle search.

Reaching Tajikistan by rail
  • A new train line has been built connecting Dushanbe to Qurghonteppa followed by Kulob.
  • Train journey is not an admirable one. Due to Tazikistan's mountainous terrain the rail network is winding.
  • Train journey is not comfortable and it is time consuming, however, it is cheaper than flight.
