The term Defense Mapping itself is self explanatory, which implies that the mapping is done only for Defense purpose. Those are required for knowing secret routs, road condition. It also meets some other quarries related to Geographic Information System. But one thing is common in every map producing company that those maps are strictly not sellable outside Defence. That is why they are not accessed to the common people. But in some special cases they are sellable to the outsiders with special permission.

 

Characteristics of Defense Mapping are as follows : Defense Mapping are generated on the basis of some guide lines.

Large scale Map : Defense Map is generally done on a large scale basis. That means each map contain very small area of interest. Therefore a very detailed information can be obtained. As Defense Mapping is done for the purpose of security, so they are produced in such a way that very in depth observation of the area of interest can be obtained.  Detailed Information : As the Defense Map are produced for military uses mainly it provides very detailed information about –settlement – settlement pattern, its size, shape, association. Communication – it is the most important purpose in Defense. As Defense Mapping are done for the basis of security,Military should have a keen knowledge about the communication of the mapped area. It includes the roads, railways, passes etc. as those passes are the secret routes for terrorists to access to the other countries.

Physical Condition – it depicts the most possible way to access the area by showing the up to date information. During war the road with most good condition is used to communicate with that area. Physical condition of an area can also provide information to the Defense very vividly that how the area can be tackled while in problem and also shows that which area is more secured.

Purpose of Defense Mapping : –

 

As it is discussed earlier, Defense Mapping are done on the basis of some pre-reserved purposes. These are –

• Provide Security –Defense Mapping are done with large scale. The military those are protecting our nation from any sudden attack, in the border area, can keep an eye on the whole geographic area with the help of that detailed map.
• Mapping on Controversial areas –Defense Mapping are also done to study and to keep an eye on the controversial areas. Such as Defense Mapping on Pakistan area, which is under high controversy.
• Formulation of Geo-political strategy –Defense Mapping helps in the formulation of Geopolitical strategies and other long term plans of the nation.
