Drive mapping allows you to navigate easily and quickly to network. Through windows explorer you can transfer files between your computer and the server. Through drive mapping you can access anywhere in the computer even when you are working in windows explorer, my computer or software application. Drive mapping is nothing more than assigning a drive letter to a remote share. You can also manage files through windows explorer. File managing includes deleting, renaming etc.

 

Many types of network drives are present in computer, rather you hunt them through a list every time make your own drive map. So your machine can connect to it directly when you log in and also gives you the options either save or quite. Computer gives a letter to drive. Computer will set up your own drive which is named as ‘S’ drive.

 

The process of drive mapping in Microsoft Windows –

  • Firstly click on the My computer icon and then select Map network drive.
  • Then choose a letter and drive letter. When map network drive window is displayed you can choose a drive letter.
  • After choosing the letter you have to tick the box that says reconnect at login and then click finish.
  • Now drive mapping is complete.
  • After completion your drive mapping you can locate it on my computer icon. Double clicking on this new icon you can reach your desired location.
  • You can also see a list of folders and files.
  • Through this drive you can transfer your file or folder to another location.
  • Drive renaming is also possible.

To find a location of a drive-

 

  • Windows XP desktop view and start menu are different from other Windows view like Windows 2000.
  • It is required to convert the set up Windows XP to Windows 2000.
  • The conversion process is click start and select search.
  • First you choose Printers, Computers, or People and then choose A computer on the network.
  • Type your desired computer name and then click search.
  • Search your desired computer folder to which you want to map.
  • There after select copy path and then select copy long path.
  • Then select Map network drive, choose your folder and paste the path name.
  • Assign a letter to the drive.
  • The drive is finally mapped.
  • You can accessed to network storage in a number of ways. Quick access to storage :
  • The easiest way to access a network storage volume or directory is by entering the UNC path in the run command dialog box.
  • Click start and select run
  • Type UNC path of the volume or volume you want to access or you can easily access to open field by clicking OK to continue.
  • You can type UNC path directly to the Address.
  • To remove a drive mapping :
  • Right click on the neighborhood network icon on the desktop.
  • Select Disconnect Network Drive

 

Drive mapping is not a easy task. Through your mapped drive you can easily access to your files and folders. Mapping a drive letter to a volume or directory allows you to access the volume in the same fashion that you access your local hard drive as drive letter. You also have the option of making the mapping permanently available whenever you connect to the network.
