Maiana

A District of Kiribati,Maiana is an atoll in the North Gilbert Islands. The atoll of Mania with a total area of 15.9 square kilometers is 14 km in length and 9.5 km in width. Surrounding the Lagoon, in the North Eastern side of the atoll is a single island while the Western edge consists of a submerged reef. The atoll of Maiania circumscribed by the Pacific Ocean is Paradise Island and much loved by the Tourists. With a population of about 1,685 people the atoll of Maiania survives mainly on trade and tourism. The atoll of Maiania mainly capitalizes on its natural treasures and its sea routes that it utilizes for trading.

The relationship between the Gilbertese and the traders of atoll of Maiania in the late 19th century were generally cordial and had a certain degree of understanding. However, there were some incidents that often led to problems like theft and destruction of traders’ property, taboos on trade were the most common complaint raised by the traders. However, these problems were much caused by the demand of the Islanders for more money.

This land of water, lagoons and reefs of the atoll of Maiania are the main attraction of this island of Kiribati. The natural beauty of the land makes it one of the best tourist spots in the world and tourism acts as a major revenue earner for the region. The splashes of the blue waters against the ridges and the reefs is a pleasant sight to watch. Perhaps a lot of its beauty is still to be explored but the beauty of the atoll of Maiania can hardly be ignored.
