Located in South Asia, India is the seventh-largest country by area. Home to a multilingual and multi-ethnic society, India is bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, and the Arabian Sea on the south-west. The country shares its land borders with Pakistan to the west, China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the northeast, and Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma) to the east. While India is in the proximity of the Maldives and Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean, the very renowned Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Indonesia and Thailand. India lies to the north of the equator between 6° 44′ and 35° 30′ north latitude and 68° 7′ and 97° 25′ east longitude.
