Burrell Collection in Glasgow showcases a unique art collection

Named after its donor, Sir William Burrell, the Burrell Collection is an award-winning building that houses some of the finest artistic collections. Born in 1861, Burrell got inclined to the arts in his teens. In 1900s, he became popular as a respected collector. The displays comprise works by major artists such as Degas, Rodin, and Cézanne. The Burrell Collection in Glasgow also includes samples of late medieval art, Ancient Civilizations, Chinese and Islamic art. Besides holding temporary and permanent exhibitions, the Burrell conducts regular events for both adults and families.

Highlights of the Burrell Collection

  • Egyptian vessels, stone sculptures, and other exhibits dating from the Archaic Period (about 3,000 BCE) to the Ptolemaic Period (332-30 BCE).
  • Greece & Rome artifacts and paintings. The central courtyard is decorated with an imposing Warwick Vase, belonging to the second century AD. The rooms surrounding the courtyard are reconstructions of the Drawing Room, Dining Room, and Hall.
  • Chinese ceramics such as T’ang Dynasty ceramic ware, fine variety of porcelain artifacts, Neolithic sepulture urns, etc.
  • Gothic art displays in the form of religious art from medieval times.
  • Islamic ceramics and metalwork, dating roughly from the 9th to the 19th centuries.
