Matagalpa City Guide



Matagalpa is a densely populated city in Nicaragua, situated on the Rio Grande River with a pleasant and climate. The word Matagalpa has been derived from the Matagalpan priest, meaning “Let’s proceed to where the rocks are”.

Location of Matagalpa

The city is located on the northern highlands of Nicaragua between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It rests at a height of 3000feet above sea level, with a huge population of 480,000. It is 130km away from Managua and is the 5th largest city in Nicaragua.

History of Matagalpa

Originally the inhabitants of Matagalpa were the Indians, who slowly deserted the place with the advent of the Spanish, who were looking for gold in the city. After their departure, Matagalpa was filled with soldiers and missionaries, besides the German, English, and North Americans who settled to grow and produce coffee in the pastoral surroundings.

Economy of Matagalpa

The main areas of production in which Matagalpa flourishes are coffee, cacao, flowers, fruits, vegetables, milk and cheese. Different kinds of vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes and onions and fruits like the bananas, grapefruit and oranges are also produced and sold in the local markets.

One can visit places such as the Cemetery or the steam train at the Selva Negra Museum or can have a look at the Coffee Museum.
