Burundi Population



Burundi’s Population is quite colorful as it consists of people from various cultural backgrounds. Presently the population of Burundi is 6,373,002. The population growth rate of Burundi is 2.36%.

The birth rate of the country is 39.87 births/1,000 population, the death rate is 16.3 deaths/1,000 population and the fertility rate is 6.07 children born/woman.

Burundi’s Population can be divided into three age structures such as from 0-14 years: 46.5%, from 15-64 years: 50.7%, and from 65 years and above 2.8%. Population in Burundi consists of people from different ethnic groups like Hutu 85%, Twa 1%, Tutsi 14%, South Asians 2,000, and Europeans 3,000.

The People of Burundi follow different religions. The main prevailing religion is Christianity as 67% of the population follows this religion. Among them, 62% are Roman Catholic and 5% are Protestant. 23% of the population follow indigenous beliefs and 10% of the population are Muslim.

Burundi Population speaks different languages. Kirundi and French are the official languages. People who live along Lake Tanganyika and in the Bujumbura area also speak Swahili. 35.5% of the population is literate. 49.3% of the literate people are male and 22.5% are female. The people of Burundi are quite hospitable and friendly.
