Colombia’s Football History :

The Colombia National Football team is governed by the Colombian Football Federation and represents the country in all international competitions. It is one of the member countries of CONMEBOL, the continental governing body for football in South America and is also the oldest confederation in the world. It has been fairly successful in achieving milestones throughout its soccer history.

Many records are held by its individual players. One of the notable achievements is the first and only ‘Olympic Goal’ (goal scored directly from a corner) in the history of the World Football Cup, scored by Marcos Coll against USSR. Their World Football Cup participation started from 1962 and till today it has appeared four times in the mega tournament while it entered the Confederations Cup only once in 2003. In the continental championship Copa America, the team started playing in 1975 and in the South American Championship it began contesting from 1945 and played till 1963.

Besides the above mentioned tournaments, the national football team also participated in CONCACAF Gold Cup and finished runners-up once in 2000 and was placed 3rd in 2005.

Colombia’s Success Story :

Colombia’s national football team’s overall World Football Cup record is not that impressive. The team entered the round of 16 only once in 1990 and qualified to the Group Stage thrice. In the Confederations Cup, it was placed fourth in 2003 which was its only appearance in the tournament. In the continental championship Copa America, it grabbed the title in 2001, finished runners-up in 1975, finished at third position three times, placed at fourth place twice and entered the quarter finals thrice. The Copa America tournament has been a real boon for the national side as this is the only successful competition for them so far.

The Colombia national football team currently ranks 4th in World Football Rankings and 6th in Elo World Rankings. This is their highest soccer ranking till date and their first appearance in the top 10 since 2002. The national football team has qualified for the upcoming World Football Cup which will be held in Brazil. The team qualified through CONMEBOL’s World Football Cup qualifying tournament.
