Somaliland, which is officially known as the Republic of Somaliland is one of the main Somalia regions. Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, although this independence was not internationally recognized. The total land area of Somaliland is 137,600km2.

The capital of Somaliland is Hargeisa. The population of Somaliland is almost 3.5 million and the main religion is Islam, with most of the people belonging to the Sunni clan.

Geographical Location of Somaliland

Somaliland is situated on the eastern part of Africa. To the west of Somaliland is Djibouti, Ethiopia is situated on the south of Somaliland, while Somalia lies on the east of it.

Somaliland History

Somaliland received its independence on 26th of June, 1960 from the British rule. Somaliland and Italian Somalia were joined together on 1st of July, 1960 to form the Somalia Republic. However, the Somalia Republic turned into fragments due to war. This was followed by the withdrawal of Somaliland from the Somalia Republic, and Somaliland was established as a sovereign region within Somalia.

Climate of Somaliland

Somaliland experiences a type of tropical monsoon climatic conditions with four separate seasons. The rainy season occurs in the month of April to June, when the country receives most of its rainfall. This is followed by the summer season that commences on the month of July and ends in September. October to November is the autumn months while winter begins in December and continues till March.

The economy of Somalia is import-export based, with livestock being a major source of income for the people of Somaliland.
