Description : Map showing the location of French Guiana on the World map.

Where is French Guiana Located?

Though French Guiana is part of France, it is one of the country’s overseas regions and is located in South America.

Situated on the northern coast of the South American continent, French Guiana borders the Atlantic Ocean, as well as Brazil and Suriname. French Guiana sits just above the equator, with a lower latitude of 2° North. The majority of French Guiana’s population, which numbers around 236,000, lives along the coast, while the inland region consists mostly of the uninhabitable Amazon Rainforest. The capital of the region is Cayenne, which is situated along the coast, and its metropolitan area is home to almost half of the region’s population.

There are two arrondissements of France in the Guyane department, which are Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, and Cayenne. The arrondissements are further divided into communes.
