Maracaibo



Maracaibo is a city on the western end of Venezuela. It is the capital of the Zulia State, and the second largest city in Venezuela after Caracas. Maracaibo is also one of the foremost oil centers of the country. Maracaibo is situated on the coast of the Lake Maracaibo, named after the city. The city was discovered on 24th August 1499.

History of Maracaibo

Maracaibo has a very conspicuous history concerning its foundation. The city has been founded thrice. For the first time, the German Ambrosio Alfinger founded Maracaibo in 1529. He named the place Maracaibo or Villa de Maracaibo. However, lack of activity made the area unpopular, and it was evacuated in 1535, the residents being moved to Cabo de la Vela nearby Coro. The third and exact establishment of the city happened in 1574, when Captain Pedro Maldonado founded the village, giving it the name of Nueva Zamora de Maracaibo. Since then, the town has developed in proportion and scope.

Attractions of Maracaibo

Maracaibo is a picturesque city. It has a wonderful array of tourist spots, which make it a very popular destination for the tourists. The attraction of Maracaibo include the Plaza Bolivar, the Cathedral, the Highway Park, the Centro Lago Mall, the Carabobo street at popular Saladillo, the Paseo del Lago, the Baralt Theater, and the governor’s office.

Maracaibo Lake

The Maracaibo Lake is the largest natural attraction of the state of Zulia. It has a total extension of 13000 square km. The Maracaibo Lake is placed 23rd among the biggest lakes across the earth. The lake is bigger than any other lake in Venezuela. Volumes of traffic and freight are transported through its waters. The lake plays an active role in the commercial activities of Maracaibo.

Maracaibo is one of the most resourceful cities in Venezuela. It accounts for most of the oil resources of the country. It contributes hugely to the commercial development of Venezuela.
