Al Khawr Province



Al Khawr is a municipality or province of Qatar. In Arabic the name of Al Khawr means “sea surrounded by lands from three sides”. The province of Al Khawr is positioned in the north eastern coast of Qatar which is at a distance of 50 kilometers from Doha.

Before getting independence the province of Al Khawr was ruled by the tribe of Al -Thani and continues to be dominated by them. The majority of the population of the province of Al Khawr belongs to that particular tribe. The province is also famous from the tourism point of view. The town has a hotel named Al Sultan beach hotel and resort which was initially a hotel. Al Khawr also has historical mosques. The province also has a stadium known as Al Khor Stadium.

In the eastern frontier of Al Khawr is the Persian Gulf. Four other municipalities are bordering the province of Al Khawr. They are:

  • Al Jumaliyah in the southern side
  • Umm Salal in the south western side
  • Madinat ash Shamal in the north western side
  • Al Ghuwariyah in the western side.

The population of the province of Al Khawr as recorded in the year 2004 was 31,547 people and the population density amounted to be 31 square kilometers. The area of Al Khawr is 996 square kilometers.
