The name Penang comes from “Pulau Pinang” or the Isle of the Betel Nut. Modern Penang was founded when the Sultan of Kedah ceded it to Francis Light of British East India Company in exchange of protection from Siamese and Burmese armies. F.Light landed here is 1786 and named the island Prince of Wales Island while Georgetown, its capital  was named after King George III. In 1800, the Sultan also ceded the Seberang Perai region. Since then, Penang had become a growing trading center. Today, it covers 1,048 sq km and has an approximate population of 1.5 million.

The Central Hill range lies in the middle of the island rising to 830 meters while sandy beaches and narrow strips of coastal plains border the island.
