Tampere is a city in Finland. It was founded in1775 as a marketplace around Tammerkoski River by Gustav III of Sweden. After the country’s independence in 1918, the city played a major role in the Civil War. The town grew into a large industrial center in the 19th and 20th centuries accepting the title ‘Manchester of the North. Now, the city has become the second most important urban center in the country and the biggest inland city in the Nordic countries.

Area & Population:

Situated in southern Finland, Tampere lies between two lakes Nasijarvi and Pyhajarvi. Located at 61º30′ Latitude North and 23º45′ Longitude East, the city occupies a total area of 687.9 sq. km with a land area of 522.7 sq. km. the city has a population of 346,000 making it the third largest city in Finland and the largest city outside the Greater Helsinki area.

Tourist Attractions:

The remains of the Civil War and various other recreational centers attract tourists to the city.

Transportation:

Being an important railway junction, tracks from several parts of the nation join in the city. This allows train journeys to most of the places in the country. Tampere Airport serves the city. Local buses and taxis include public transportation in the city.

The city has several museums that preserve historical artifacts of the city. The Vapriikki Museum Centre which includes the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame and the Shoe Museum, Tampere Art Museum, Tampere Lenin Museum, The Muumilaakso Museum, The Amuri museum of Workers’ Housing, The Museum of Minerals, The Sara Hilden Art Museum and the Museum of Dolls and Costumes are the museums in the city that display unique materials.
